The Voyage Home
by Ranil on Nov.05, 2009, under Life in Australia, Ranting
How does life change when you’re not around? It’s a thought i’ve come to think about lately. How do people change and move on when you’re not looking? Because the world doesn’t stop simply because you want it to. The faces they shift and sway with the passage of time and the hearts that you once captured are no longer yours to hold.
How does life change when you’re not around? Objects and places change. People aren’t necessarily the people you left behind. But can there be that single thread that you hope once connected you?. Can your friends still be the friends that you left behind in an airport terminal? Will you still remember the quirks and the nuances of the people that you once shared your life with?
Top 5 Wishlist for October
by Ranil on Sep.28, 2009, under Technology, Top 5
I’m feeling like making this post a clip show. I’ve been working a lot with scaffolding in my code so I figured rather than do all the work, I’d leave it up to others while I fill in the blanks. So I present to you my wish list for October 2009. Feeling generous?
Forget the IPod Touch – this is the Mp3 player I want. With its large touchscreen and independence from the dreaded iTunes I think this will be the next player that will Taylor Swift music collection. I liked the original Zune (which I borrowed from Ian) because of its interface and its default earphones. The next version promises to be leaps and bounds ahead of its time. If only it came as phone.
Something New: Week 18 – Foie Gras
by Ranil on Aug.18, 2009, under Life List, Places To Eat In Sydney, Something New
One of my favourite pastimes is eating different foods. I like the adventure that comes with going outside of your usual food comfort zones and sampling something your palette has never tried before. It’s rare when I turn down a food I’ve never tried before simply because my philosophy has always been try everything at least once. If you don’t like it never eat it again but half the journey that comes from travelling is about trying the food. So last week I added to my eclectic list of food forays – including scorpion, balut, and freshly caught frogs – the french dish Foie Gras.
Something New: Week 17 – The Argyle and Lowenbrau
by Ranil on Aug.11, 2009, under Something New
This is long overdue. I should have posted this up weeks ago but I’ve been a bit lazy and tied up with other things. Weeks ago a couple of cousins and I decided to meet up after work for a few drinks. This of course quickly degenerated into a night of almost 4 liters of Franziskaner and a variety of flavors of schnapps. Yes, drinking in Sydney has never tasted so good.
Something New: Week 16 – A New Commute

Someone once pointed out that going to work wasn’t necessarily a bad thing. I can tell you though I’ll take lying on a beach somewhere and sipping on a cold beer over hopping on a train to North Sydney any day. After my many months of travelling, drinking, sleeping in, and watching my bank account do crazy roller coaster ups and downs I head back to the working force. I trade T shirts and boardshorts for button up shirts and slacks; reading books for reading code; boarding planes and taking photos for boarding trains and a paycheck.
