A stray conversation over coffee lead to the topic of ones top five most depressing songs. These are the songs that when you hear just floor you. I think the season calls for it. So here is my top five most depressing songs.

  1. Counting Crows – Good Time

countingcrows.jpgI heard this song randomly one day flipping through my music collection. Counting Crows has always held a fond place for me and this song cemented it for me. Don’t we all just want to have a good time?

    Lyric Sampling:
“I can look into your eyes and see the mess we’re in.. darling if it’s shit came out.. then I suppose it’s shit went in”

  2. Stevie Nicks – Landslide (Acoustic Version Only)

landslide.jpgWhen the song starts off with the words “This one’s for you daddy” I can already feel a sudden sense of sadness falling in. Her lyrics express a great pain about growing older and about feeling a little overwhelmed by life. This song does me in every time.

    Lyric Sampling:
“Well I’ve been afraid of changing cause I built my life around you but time makes you older, children get older, I’m getting older too”

  3. October Fall – If We’re All Alone, Aren’t We In This Together?

octoberfall.jpgWhen a song about drug addiction can bring you to your knees you know you’ve got problems. Sally and I used to listen to this song as she was experiencing a bit of sadness in her life and I think the emotion stuck. It’s a song that can make you realize how hard a problem can be and the fight we need to maintain ourselves. “Villains die but heroes live forever.”

    Lyric Sampling:
“Throw my pride into this fire, my confidence is dead i’m tired. I won’t burn up I’ll just burn out.”

  4. Dan Fogelberg – Same Old Lang Syne

dan-fogelberg.jpgWhen a song about an old flame can bring you to your knees you can’t help but put it on your list of depressing songs. The thought of the one that got away is a topic that brings anyone to tears.

    Lyric Sampling:
“And as I turned to make my way back home the snow turned into rain”

  5. Janis Ian – At Seventeen

janisian.jpgI can’t say much about this song except.. wow… being a high school kid is tough sometimes…

    Lyric Sampling:
“Those of us with ravaged faces lacking in the social graces. desperately remained at home inventing lovers on the phone”
