Something New: Week 10 – Karaoke in Burbank
by Ranil on Nov.16, 2008
So what do you do while LA burns down around you? If you’re anything like us then you’ll go out and sing badly in front of a bunch of drunken strangers. This weeks activity finds us in the city I love to hate – Burbank. Aside from the smoking ticket I got long ago from them they are home to the Burbank Bar and Grill which has “Karaoke Night” every Thursday and Sunday.
I haven’t been to karaoke in a while and singing in front of complete strangers is not exactly my strongest talent. So, after a bit of liquid courage and some improvisational prompting by Arman I headed to the stage and began my horrendous rendition of Major Tom. “Ground Control to Major Tom!!!” I am thankful that many in the bar that night already had a few drinks in them (myself included). I think this fact was able to mitigate the brunt of the horror that I introduced to the patrons. But being who I am I can’t help but sing 80′s songs and sing them badly I did.
So while ash snowflakes fell around the city the tunes of amateur singers (good and bad alike) rang through the air. We shared merriment and mutual love for song. If only I had sang the Proclaimers – I would walk 500 miles.
