How do you measure a year?
by Ranil on Dec.31, 2008
A thousand cups of coffee later and the year draws to a close yet again. As the cold settles in over California I sit outside and brave the weather in search of cigarettes and inspiration. With 2008 ending and 2009 only a few hours away I sit and write this retrospective. What did I do yesterday?
It was a year of change – of knowing where you are isn’t necessarily where you need to be. A year of becoming be it in terms of self discovery or self-reinvention. Changing to become better a person – wiser but not necessarily smarter.
It was a year where I learned that doing something new can lead you to greater expectations of yourself and those around you. That in doing things outside of the normal can lead to a better understanding of who you are and what things mean to you.
It was a year of loss. Finding old friends and new found loves slipping through our grasps. Of realizing that in process the possibilities that lie beyond. Turning our tragedies into our triumphs. Learning to let go of that which you need to let go and bring closer those that need to be.
It was a year of adventure and roadtrips. Seeing new places and finding yourself somewhere along the way. But in the end always coming home.
It was a year of happiness, sadness, joy, and drunken karaoke. It was a year of good friends, good laughs, and good memories. It was a year like any other year – a little worse than some – but still a year nonetheless.
It took a year to get me to realize once again that life is best lived in motion. That getting back on the path of where you need to be means that sometimes a detour is necessary.
Three hundred and sixty five days later and untold broken new years resolutions later I’m back to where I started. A little worse for wear but nonetheless still here. I know that my future lies in a distant land, a place where my friends cannot follow, and as such next year will be a little less because of it. Let our lives be indicative of the people we are – so let our lives be full and happy.
Happy New Years.
