The simple life…
by Ranil on Jan.21, 2009
It’s raining… I’ve come to the land of my birth and found it alien. A few days ago I knew the comfort of a warm running shower and today I showered with water from a well. It’s a hard life but also one that is simple. Here I am surrounded by family and that makes it seem worthwhile.
I’m in a hospital taking care of my grandmother while we wait for my uncle to finish his dialysis. If the humidity doesn’t get to me maybe the mosquitoes will. It seems to be a struggle against nature here. The jungle seems to want to reclaim what once was its own and man is losing the fight. But I find a sense of wonder here. Nature’s beauty intermixed with poverty and dirt. The rich living a few meters away from the squalid. The proliferation of cellphones here so that even the poor farmer has one.
The smell is what reminds me of where I am. The smell of… not quit anything I know back home. I miss the smell of chocolate and honey. I miss the smell of a grande Americano… but I’m glad I’m here.
