Something New: Week 12 – Waterfall Jumping
by Ranil on Feb.11, 2009
I starred at the water barrelling down and aimed for the place my guide had told me to. I took a breath and began to leap… no… not yet. A moment of fear and I held back. Then I reminded myself that life should be about experiencing everything and this was a great experience. So, I took a breath and lept.
I hit the water and emerged near the the bottom of Mag-Asa waterfalls in Bohol, Philippines. I had swam to the base of the waterfall, climbed up and touched the roaring cascade. I marveled at its beauty and then I lept from halfway up the waterfall to meet the water below. I swam in the cool waters surrounded by rich tropical forrest and then I had lunch in a little hut on its banks.
You quickly forget that even the most pristine places can do you harm as I quickly learned while walking on the slippery ground that surrounds the falls. I tripped and fell hard on the ground and in the process cut my foot. The cut is mild (if by mild you mean that the top layer of skin on my foot is gone) but at least it isn’t a big cut.
The journey back home from the falls was an adventure in itself. As we slowly made our way back home we stopped amongst various places. We rode jeepney after jeepney and met up with a few Tarsiers along the way. In the end we hitched a ride on the back of 10-wheel truck and rode through the forrest in open air. I waved at locals and tourists alike got to see the island from a very high vantage point.
