Something New: Week 14 – Football In The Land Down Under
by Ranil on May.19, 2009
How do I succinctly describe Aussie Rules Football. I think the best description would be chaotic. Like many things Australian it seems to be a mishmash of many things coming together to form something that is unique to the land down under. Footy, like many things Australian, is as strange and as loveable as the platypus.
The game is relatively simple to play. Scoring is accomplished by kicking the ball through the posts on the field rather than touchdowns and passing is done via combination of kicking or hand ball (basically punching the ball to your teammate). Unlike Rugby or NFL the sport is played on an Oval shaped field with differing sizes depending on the stadium. Instead of kick-offs the ball is bounced high in the air and both teams scramble for control. It is an organized chaos.
Like beer and meat pies, footy has a fond place in the heart of all Australians. Personally I prefer the organized brutally of Rugby but it was a good chance to get in touch with the Australian in me. I loved the atmosphere but I found myself lost when watching the actual game. Oh well, the Sydney Swans won anyway so here’s to the home team.
