Pocket Universes

by Ranil on May.27, 2009

Everything I carry around usuallyI’ve gotten used to living a life without keys. For the past few months I haven’t heard the familiar rattling of car and house keys as I make my way through the day but that’s not to say I haven’t had to carry a lot of things in my pocket since leaving the states. So I decided to take a cue from the guys over at Lifehacker and share with you what I carry around on a usual basis.

Samsung SGH-D780Cellphone – Samsung SGH-D780
This phone is an absolute piece of crap. I bought it out of a need for a GSM phone since my previous phone (a Verizon HTC Touch) only worked on the American CDMA network – a network long abandoned by other countries. While my previous phone was able to browse the web and sync my email and contacts to my home server, I find this phone has issues with anything other than calling – and it even does that poorly. One would think that the selling feature of the phone (dual SIM cards) would make it an ideal phone for traveling I’ve found that in reality, the phone was a waste of good money. I miss a smartphone. I miss good technology.

Creative Zen X-FiMusic Player – Creative Zen X-Fi
I should have bought an iPod is what comes to mind when I think of this item. This was a last minute purchase before I left the states back in January and it has become a purchase that I’ve come to terms with but at the same time regret. I like it’s ability to natively play xvid and divx files (a major factor in deciding to choose this player) but only if the files have been resized to something ludicriously small! The buttons are strange and navigating the menu makes me long for the simplicity of an ipod. I don’t mind it’s 32gb hard drive and I do like the quality of the headphones but these are things that can’t make up for the fact that it’s a pain in the ass to use. I think I’ll go with Apple next time.
Note: With the Zune HD coming out later this year I just may go with that instead of an iPod

Camel Crush CigarettesCigarettes – Camel Crush
Thanks to a well thought and much appreciated care package I am perhaps one of the few people in Australia to have this in their pocket. As much as I love the package of the cigarette it is its ability to transform that endears me the most to this brand. Breakthroughs in technology have allowed scientists to create a cigarette capable of changing its nature mid-smoke [Personal side note: I think it was space technology but that's just me]. The cigarette starts off as a smooth normal cigarette and can be smoked as such if the desire is there. However, should one decide that they want a menthol, a quick press of the filter changes the cigarette [insert transforming sound] and the experience changes.

Note: This was not meant to be an advertisement for smoking and all the cancer it brings but nonethless it is something I do enjoy.

Zippo LighterLighter – Zippo
The newest addition to my pocket brigade. This lighter was given to me by cousin for my 28th birthday and has the words “Vita in Motus” inscribed onto it. Translated from Latin it means “Life in Motion” – a motto that I have come to believe in strongly over the past year. Thus the lighter serves two purposes: a. to light up the Camel Crush’s described earlier and b. to remind me that life is best lived when not standing still. Plus I really love that clicky sound.

Australian MoneyMoney
I hate carrying coins – they make you jingle when you walk. Here in Australia it’s hard to get away from them due to the existence of one and two dollar coins. I’ve lately taken to paying in cash rather than using my card for everyday purchases (I think it might have something to do with a pesky surcharge incurred by my bank and most retailers here). It does make for an easier way to track how much you’ve spent but at the same time you also realize how little you have left!

Kenneth Cole Reaction AutomaticWatch – Kenneth Cole Automatic
While not exactly pocket worthy this is something I rarely leave the house without. Apart from a useful tool to quickly glance at the time I find that one of the major reasons I like wearing a watch is the way it completes an outfit. The watch I wear now is in desperate need of replacement. Perhaps when I do replace my current watch I’ll give it the send off it deserves.

You’ve seen what’s in my pockets, what’s in yours?
