Something New: Week 13 – Birthday Under A Southern Cross
by Ranil on May.07, 2009, under Nostalgia, Points Of Importance, Something New
Being unemployed is the pits. Being unemployed and sick is even worse. Don’t get me wrong I don’t mind sitting around doing nothing – outside of applying for jobs and reading an inordinate amount of news – but one eventually misses the routine provided by work. In all the chaos of finding a job and getting set up down under its easy to overlook ones birthday. But this year unlike most years I will be spending my birthday in a place I haven’t had a birthday in for almost 18 years.
Something New: Week 8 – Boogie Boarding

Perhaps it wasn’t in my best interest to combat a cold by diving into the cold waters of the Pacific but when one receives a phone call on a Saturday afternoon to head out to Venice Beach and try to learn to surf for the first time, it’s hard to turn down. Armed with the idea that surf boards can be rented at the beach Jose, Ian, and I piled into a car and headed out west.

Think of something that makes you happy…
Sometimes the idea becomes to fake it till you make it. Sometimes you just need to find happiness where you can. In a cup of coffee. In your morning run. In dropping yet another belt size. In the laughter shared with your friends. In learning to hate the right people.
Sometimes battles aren’t worth fighting and sometimes they’re lost, but in the end they’re usually with yourself. So for all its worth think of something that makes you happy.

And so it begins. With a burgeoning amount of time on my hands and a recent spat of boredom/frustration I have decided that it is time to revisit my bucket list. Of all the things on there, I think it is time I took some serious time to try and learn a new languages – 2 in fact. Actually, they are languages I have had some experience with but am far from fluent with. With my new found sense of free time and an increased need to desperately do something I have decided that Spanish and Tagalog are the two languages I need to focus on.
Firstly, why Spanish? Well, I live in a city that is has a very large majority of Spanish speaking peoples. Why not learn the language? As for Tagalog, I think that when the time comes for me to visit the home of my parents I should be able to at least speak the common language, if not the dialect.
Yes, this is a method I am formulating in order to keep me occupied from certain things, but I am my best when I am learning and I am currently out of books to read. I think karma kicked my ass and I’m paying for things I’ve done in the past. But now, I must learn to better myself and learn once again to ignore the things that bother me. A little house cleaning if you will.
So to that, me gusto un vida facil. Walang problemas at walang drama.
My Bucket List (Updated 09.08.2009)
by Ranil on May.07, 2008, under Life List, Points Of Importance, Ranting
A life of meetings and commuting. I won’t say that it’s a bad life – it’s actually a great life, but is it the life I thought it would be? Not quite. I’m glad I stayed away from the possibility of being a writer. The money would’ve been great, but the chance of succeeding very low. I should have been a doctor but I think I would not been able to keep up with the logistics of it all. But that is my life, and for what it’s worth, it’s a pretty good one.
With my 27th birthday coming up I’ve decided on a few things. Firstly, I shall not be celebrating any other birthday until I turn 30, then it shall be a big old bash in the land where it all began – Australia. Secondly, at the suggestion of my sister I shall create a “life list”. You know, one of those “bucket lists” of things to do during your lifetime. I’ll keep it short for now and add to it as time progresses. I’ll keep tabs of what I’m doing, if I do it, and report back to you how it all turns out. Read on to see what I have so far.
