Places to Eat In LA: Kyushu Ramen
by Ranil on Nov.09, 2008, under Places To Eat In LA
In terms of comfort food Ramen has to rank up there with a nice Filipino breakfast. Braving the cold winds in the Valley my friends and I decided to head out to one of my favorite Ramen places outside of Little Tokyo – Kyushu Ramen. This place became a local favorite of mine a few years due to its location and its selection of different kinds of Ramen. This type of Ramen should not be confused with the prepackaged Ramen you find at stores due to its more complicated nature. While the main idea stays the same – noodles and soy or miso base – the collection of vegetables and different meats and spices make Ramen a truly enjoyable experience for me.
Sally’s 27th Birthday

Sally finally joined the ranks of us 27 year old today. I wish her a very Happy Birthday! To celebrate her hitting yet another year (btw I forgot that it’s 27 this year and not 28 so a whole bunch of pictures are labeled 28 – apologies) the gang headed out to Blue Monkey in Hollywood to celebrate. We may be old, but we sure can drink like teenagers.
Something New: Week 2 (Part 2) – The Hunt For Glowy Grunion
by Ranil on Jul.21, 2008, under Something New
In the warm summer months a strange spectacle takes place along the Californian coast. Thousands of fish known as grunions come ashore in the hopes of mating and laying eggs to ensure future generations. Amidst their writhing copulation, thousands of spectators yearly interrupt this slimy union and catch the participants in mid coitus. Some are thrown back for good luck and some are taken home to be eaten. This is the Grunion Run. This year I went to my first.
Something New: Week 2 (Part 1) – Kiss Kiss Bang Bang

On July 18th 2008, I shot a man with a 9mm Beretta. I calmly loaded the magazine into the gun, took aim, put my finger on the trigger and pulled. A couple of rounds later the man sported a hole in his head and a couple on his chest. I shot a man, and then I went to have coffee.
A new perspective is really more of the old

I spent a lot of the last week or so in a state of fugue. Walking around but not really accepting where I was. It took a few final words and a semblance of an exit plan in order to really begin to make myself function again.
In going through a few old files, my sister came across a binder of mine that contained printouts of the Vacuum Diagrams newsletter I once put out. What funny things we once were. Me and my sultry crew of post-teenage angst writers. Were we good? Were we bad? That’s more for others to decide. I’ll let you decide.
