Something New: Week 10 – Karaoke in Burbank
by Ranil on Nov.16, 2008, under Something New
So what do you do while LA burns down around you? If you’re anything like us then you’ll go out and sing badly in front of a bunch of drunken strangers. This weeks activity finds us in the city I love to hate – Burbank. Aside from the smoking ticket I got long ago from them they are home to the Burbank Bar and Grill which has “Karaoke Night” every Thursday and Sunday.
Places to Eat In LA: Kyushu Ramen
by Ranil on Nov.09, 2008, under Places To Eat In LA
In terms of comfort food Ramen has to rank up there with a nice Filipino breakfast. Braving the cold winds in the Valley my friends and I decided to head out to one of my favorite Ramen places outside of Little Tokyo – Kyushu Ramen. This place became a local favorite of mine a few years due to its location and its selection of different kinds of Ramen. This type of Ramen should not be confused with the prepackaged Ramen you find at stores due to its more complicated nature. While the main idea stays the same – noodles and soy or miso base – the collection of vegetables and different meats and spices make Ramen a truly enjoyable experience for me.
Brief Interludes

It has been quite a while since I’ve posted something on my website, a sin that I shall be punished very severely for. Recent developments in my life has seen me edging further into the San Fernando Valley into an area bordering what could be seen as Ventura County! Rather than my usual update to post up the usual weekly “Something New” I figured I’d return to my roots and begin my usual tirade about things going on around the world.

Something New: Week 1 – Riding The Bus To Work
by Ranil on Jul.11, 2008, under Something New
How do you get rid of one experience? Have 100 more to take it’s place. So, in the spirit of keeping things fresh and exciting for myself I’ve decided to drown myself in a multitude of experiences. Once a week (hopefully, if not every two weeks) I will try to do something new. Something I haven’t done in a while or something I haven’t done ever. This shall include, trying new foods, things, situations, and whatever comes to mind. This week it was riding the bus to work.
Los Angeles has a type of bus service called the Commuter Express which is basically a fast bus service for professionals that only runs during Rush Hour. This makes riding the bus from the San Fernando Valley to downtown Los Angeles even remotely feasible. With the help of my sister, I was able to plan this expedition out and hit the buses for the first time since almost 7 years ago!
We’re here because we’re here because we’re here
by Ranil on Mar.13, 2008, under Nostalgia
There’s a strong wind blowing through the San Fernando Valley tonight. I’m feeling nostalgic tonight as I prepare this website to be something more than it is now. Little known fact – way back in the day (around 1999 – 2000) me and a group of friends got together to write a newsletter titled the Vacuum Diagrams. The newsletter was named after a Stephen Baxter book which inspired me to create something that I hoped would allow those of my friends moving out to college to maintain a semblance of connection to the place they once called home. In many ways, this website serves to be a resurrection of that, a place to post news, musings, stupid little tidbits of information that randomly pop into my mind, and the occasional informative article.Ahh, those were the days. Staying up late trying to come up with something to say. Getting on Michelle and Helen’s ass to write me an article before I sent out the newsletter bi-weekly. It had a good run, 85 issues 50+ subscribers – most of which weren’t even people I knew. It was sad to see it go. What started out as a way to ship off news to far flung friends became something more. A way for 3 friends (4 if you weren’t in the joke) to say something about their lives, their hopes, and their ambitions. It holds a fond place in my heart.
So, to honour the memory of VD I’ve decided to revive a section of the newsletter here on my blog. The section is called “In The Corner”. It’s basically a collection of random musings that I think of and post. There will be no explanation and if it makes sense even better. It’s just about saying something that mostly for me, but you get to read it too. Eight years later and at least Xanthros lives on, if not in newsletter form, at least on this blog. I hope you decide I’m worth reading and I hope while you’re here you find something worthwhile.
BTW: If you are interested in receiving the entire set of the Vacuum Diagrams contact me. I’ll hook it up.
